FOR TODAY: We complete our FINAL EXAMINATION. Please make sure to answer the PHOTO QUESTIONS with two complete sentences that explain WHAT the event or person is and WHY the event is important. For your essay questions, make sure to INTRODUCE your topic, then provide supports for your theme. Make sure that you also complete the CHALLENGE QUESTION for BONUS POINTS!

You will need to enter your NAME to participate. I HIGHLY recommend just using your name, not something dumb like "TheMaster" or "HYPERCLONE." You do NOT want to take any chances that Mr. B. does not know who you are.

Although you can do this on your phone, I recommend that you do this on your CHROMEBOOK, so that you can be sure to type properly. Misspelled words will not be given points in this competition!

There will be 60 questions. The student in each class that has the BEST score at the end of our competition will receive an AMAZING PRIZE. Seriously.

FOR TODAY: We continue to cover AMERICA SINCE THE WAR- 50 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW. For those of you in 8th Period that missed last WEDNESDAY, you have a LOT to catch up on, please review all of the early "50 THINGS THAT YOU NEED TO KNOW" (up to slide 12.) I will be going QUICKLY in class today for 8th Period, as we have a full double class period to catch up on.

SAM: I will have an adjusted FINAL EXAMINATION ready for you Wednesday. It will include everything up through today's lecture. It will NOT be easy. I recommend reviewing all of the 50 things that we discuss and I would review information from this semester regarding the changing role of minorities, such as women and blacks, in the United States since the founding of our nation. In addition, I would recommend reviewing the Technological advances from the 1800s until the 2000s that have pushed the American economy forward.

BELLRINGER: We review REDLINING IN AMERICA. This WILL be one of the questions on the examination next class period, so I recommend taking notes or paying close attention to the information in this video!

FOR TODAY: We do a review of our upcoming UNIT EXAM- AMERICAN LIFE: 1900-1929 There will actually be two questions:

  • "Describe AMERICA at the start of the 20th Century." Students will be expected to come up with a comprehensive essay that discusses AT LEAST FIFTEEN different areas of culture, technology, education, social issues or leisure and entertainment pertaining to the United States in the period from 1900-1929. You must explain each of your fifteen areas in some detail to receive credit!
  • "Describe REDLINING in America. What was it? What is the LONG-TERM effect of REDLINING on minority communities in America? How does REDLINING effect education, wealth accumulation, health and the policing of neighborhoods?
  • There will also likely be an extra credit question, but that will be a surprise.

You will be given a half of an index card today. You can fill this post-it note with a basic outline that you can use on your exam. NO DETAILS, just a basic outline of your 15 things!

For the EXAM, you must WRITE your answers in ESSAY format. No bullet points allowed and you must give strong descriptions of each of your 15 different areas.

If we have time: We finish our presentation of CINDERELLA MAN.

FOR TODAY: We finish our discussion of AMERICAN LIFE: 1900-1929. Take notes!

COMING ON WEDNESDAY: UNIT EXAM- "America in the Early 20th Century." There will actually be two questions:

  • "Describe AMERICA at the start of the 20th Century." Students will be expected to come up with a comprehensive essay that discusses AT LEAST FIFTEEN different areas of culture, technology, education, social issues or leisure and entertainment pertaining to the United States in the period from 1900-1929. BELLRINGER: None for today. Please gather for a day of multi-media learning. In 8th Period, we will be discussing our new seating plan and why we have one.

FOR TODAY:

  • We review the following films, pertinent to the Gilded Age. TAKE NOTES. This material will all be eligible for future essay assignments.
  • SHORT WRITING ASSIGNMENT: Please answer the following question, giving AT LEAST THREE DETAILED EXAMPLES to support your thesis. Complete this as a Google Doc and SHARE that document with Mr. B. for grading.
    • The Colorado Fuel and Iron Company ran the Coal Fields of Southern Colorado in the early 1900s. Describe a number of different ways that the company took advantage of their workers, leading up to the Ludlow Massacre of 1914. Were the striking miners justified in attacking the company and the company's men to avenge the Ludlow Massacre? Explain.

BELLRINGER: We finally pass out the tests and discuss scores. We also discuss the Plessy v. Ferguson Case Study from Friday. I am dismayed that so many people have not complete this or even done any work on it at all, despite being in class on Friday and having almost 45 minutes to complete the activity. NOT PLEASED!

WORK DAY: We discuss THE INDUSTRIAL/GILDED AGE. TAKE NOTES. We will have a short WRITING ASSIGNMENT at the end of the lecture:

  • Please open up a Google Document and write a quick essay for me.  You are allowed to use online resources, as needed. Your topic is:

    “Robber Barons and their Philanthropy.”

    1. In this short essay, you will introduce your writing by discussing what a ROBBER BARON is and why they were called that. You should mention WORKER EXPLOITATION and CONSPICUOUS CONSUMPTION in this section.
    2. You will then describe some of the PHILANTHROPIC GIFTS made by the Robber Barons and why they made these donations.
    3. You will then make an assertion, as to whether or not YOU think that the PHILANTHROPY makes up for being a "ROBBER BARON", EXPLAIN YOUR REASONING.  
    4. You will then conclude your writing and SHARE THE DOCUMENT with me.
    5. This will be a 20 point assignment.

WORK DAY: We finish discussing the RECONSTRUCTION and the BEGINNING OF JIM CROW. We also review a short video regarding Plessy v. Ferguson and work on our Plessy v. Ferguson Case Study. This is due next class period and will be a 25 point project.
