How do I define a website in Dreamweaver?
DEFINING YOUR WEBSITE
To set up your Website using Macromedia Dreamweaver, follow
the steps below:
- Before starting:
a. Make a new folder on your network drive. Call it WEBSITES.
b. Open Dreamweaver, the icon is under START>PROGRAMS>MACROMEDIA>DREAMWEAVER
(the green icon).
- Defining your site:
a. From the drop down menus at the top of the page, select
SITE>NEW
SITE.
b. Click on the BASIC tab at the top of the dialogue box.
c. Name your SITE, something like “Mr. B.’s Website” is
fine.
d. Click NEXT at the bottom of the dialogue box.
e. On the “Editing Files, Part Two” page, click “No,
I do not want to use server technology” and NEXT.
f. On the “Editing Files, Part Three” page, click “Edit
local copies on my machine” and then click the yellow
icon to browse for your WEBSITES folder, created in step 1B.
g. Navigate until you locate your WEBSITES folder, click INTO
THE FOLDER and the click “SELECT” at the bottom
of the dialogue box.
h. Click NEXT.
i. To answer the question on the “Sharing Files” page
regarding “How do you connect to your remote server,” pull
the drop down box down to say NONE.
j. Click NEXT and the Click DONE. You have defined your site.
- Backing up your WEBSITE:
a. From the drop down menus at the top of the page, select
SITE>EDIT
SITES.
b. Make sure your defined WEBSITE is highlighted, then click
on the EXPORT button.
c. You are creating a backup file with all of your SITE information
on it. Navigate to your folder on the server called WEBSITE,
name your backup file BACKUP and click SAVE.
- Restoring your WEBSITE:
a. If you change computers or if your site does not appear
when you open Dreamweaver, do the following:
b. From the drop down menus at the top of the page, select
SITE>EDIT
SITES.
c. Make sure your defined WEBSITE is highlighted, then click
on the IMPORT button.
d. Navigate to your WEBSITE folder, locate your file called
BACKUP.ste and click OPEN. Your WEBSITE should appear on the
right side
of your screen.
