YEARBOOK THEME/DESIGN ASSIGNMENT

BACKGROUND:

We have been working on creating our yearbook for most of this year and book has finally been submitted to factory for printing. Now, we need to start working on ideas for the book next year.

That being the case, I would like EVERY yearbook student to begin working on a LAYOUT and ELEMENTS for our THEME for next year. You will need to do this if you are returning to Yearbook next year or not. You will be creating a number of pages and layouts that match your theme. We will be presenting all of these layouts in class and voting on them. The winning design layouts and elements will be used for next year's book.

PLANNING LAYOUT AND ELEMENTS: By APRIL 7, 2023, please have all of the following ELEMENTS completed as PRACTICE PAGES in YearbookAvenue.com or on A VARSITY LADDER, whichever we can make work.

OUR THEME FOR NEXT YEAR: Madison and I are pretty committed to the idea of a book next year based on SOUND. Pages will include barcode links to online audio files that will allow readers to hear the sounds of the year. Each page will have a sound link and we want to include such sounds as

  • The announcement of the Homecoming King and Queen.
  • The announcement of the starting lineup of the Huskies at a basketball game.
  • A file of a song played at one of our Music concerts.
  • The beginning of the day in a teacher's classroom.
  • Sounds of the Homecoming Parade going by on Main Street.
  • The Editor's or the Sponsor's messages for the Yearbook.
  • Senior elements, such as "HES Stories" or "Senior Quotes" or Senior Memories, etc.

This being the case, YOUR DESIGN needs to accomodate the idea of SOUND, LISTENING, SOUNDWAVES, BARCODES, etc. Please design your elements and your pages to all fit this theme in all ways possible.

CREATING THE PAGES:

Each student will need to create new PRACTICE PAGES on yearbookavenue.com. To make your pages, simply log in to yearbookavenue.com and select CREATE> PAGE DESIGN from the home page menu. Once the blank page loads, pull down the menu and click SAVE AS PRACTICE PAGE and save your pages with your name: "LASTNAME_ACADEMICS_PAGE," "LASTNAME_SPORTS_PAGE", etc. You are now ready to begin creating your page.

RESOURCES: You can use ANY RESOURCES at your disposal (ESPECIALLY LOOKBOOKS, and other yearbooks, if you wish) create vibrant and interesting yearbook pages around our tightly integrated theme.

THE LAYOUT OF THE BOOK: You have free rein to create your book in any way that you wish, you could do chronological, a seasonal book, a subject book, you name it.

THE NECESSARY PAGES: Here are the pages that a required for this assignment. You can do more if you wish:

  1. A MOCK-UP OF THE COVER OF THE BOOK: This page will be your idea for the design of the cover of the book, and must contain the words "THE HIGHLANDER" and 2025-2026 on it. This should establish our SOUND theme and how it will be addressed visually. USE ANY RESOURCES that you must to create this cover.
  2. A SPORTS PAGE or an ACADEMICS PAGE: I don't care what sport or class you pick. Using photographs from this year, put together a DOUBLE sports page in our theme, complete with captions, story, etc.
  3. A SENIOR PHOTO BLOCK SAMPLE: Our senior photo pages always include a SENIOR PHOTO, STUDENT NAMES, A PERSONALITY PHOTO (sometimes a masked image, sometimes a set of personalized photos from the senior) AND A SENIOR QUOTE. You could add elements, if you wish, such as a signature, colors, shapes, etc. PLEASE DESIGN THIS SO THAT 3 OR 4 SENIOR PHOTO BLOCKS FIT ON ONE PAGE.
  4. ELEMENTS: Please add ALL of the following in your theme pages:
    • FOLIOS: PLEASE INCORPORATE FOLIOS INTO YOUR SPORTS, ACADEMIC AND STUDENT LIFE PAGES! These are the little pictures that we use for student coverage. Feel free to be creative with these, they DO NOT have to be at the bottom of the page!
    • DESIGN ELEMENTS: What creative and interesting design elements are you including to make these pages look unique to our theme AND NOT LOOK LIKE all of the books that we have done over the past three years?
    • FONTS and COLORS: You can use any fonts and colors that you wish, but you should have a standard font for TITLES, TEXT, CAPTIONS, etc. Need a new font installed for yeabookavenue.com? See Mr. B.
    • QUICK READS: This comes in the form of graphs, charts, surveys, number panels, etc. How should these look on your pages?
    • BAR CODES: Bar codes will be how we get our sounds into our book. How do you want them to be placed on the page? How will this fit the theme of the book?
    • PHOTOS: How will these be incorporated on the page? How does your design help make these elements look NEW, INTERESTING and EXCITING, without being the same old BLOCKS of PHOTOS that we have had for years?
    • PAGE NUMBERS: How will these fit into the THEME of your book?
