YEARBOOK THEME/DESIGN ASSIGNMENT

BACKGROUND:

We have been working on creating our yearbook for most of this year and the end is finally in sight. Now, we need to start working on ideas for the book next year.

That being the case, I would like EVERY yearbook student to begin working on a THEME and a set of CLICK N GO COMPONENTS that you will put together to create PAGE LAYOUTS for the book for the next year. You will be creating pages on the fly using your CLICK N GO COMPONENTS for your presentation for next year's theme. We will be presenting all of these pages in class and voting on them. The winning design/theme will be used for next year's book.

PLANNING THEME: By MARCH 30TH, please complete a pencil sketch and write up EXLAINING your theme and your components, why you think it will work for our book next year and what some of the major elements tying the book together will be. This will be a 50 point assignment for this project. All staff will need to first do some extensive research regarding the elements that they would like to use for their theme for next year's book.Your pencil sketch for your components should include all of your ideas put onto a piece of paper to include all elements required below, along with annotation regarding where you received your ideas for your theme. This will be the first graded part of this project.

CREATING THE CLICK N GO COMPONENTS:

Each student will need to create a series of Click N Go components on yearbookavenue.com. To make your CLICK N GOs, simply log in to yearbookavenue.com and select CREATE> PAGE DESIGN from the home page menu. Once the blank page loads, create your component (page number block, title block, infographic, senior photo block, etc.) highlight all of the parts of your component, then click pull down the menu and click SAVE AS CLICK N GO. SAVE your components with your name: "LASTNAME_COMPONENT_TYPE." You now have a component to put together on your final pages.

THE THEME:  You are responsible for coming up with a THEME for the yearbook. The THEME is the verbal idea that holds the book together, as well as the design elements that give the pages of the book their own look and style The theme would be carried throughout the book, holding pages and layouts together.

RESOURCES: You can use ANY RESOURCES at your disposal (ESPECIALLY LOOKBOOKS, and other yearbooks) create vibrant and interesting yearbook COMPONENTS that work together to create a tightly integrated theme.

THE LAYOUT OF THE BOOK: This year, we had a SUBJECT PAGE book, with separate pages for each teacher, sport, club, etc. We also included some chronological information on a series of Chrono pages in our book. For the book next year, we will be trying something new. We will be using a COMPONENT layout for each page, with different staff members responsible for each component (or module) on multiple pages. Think of this like this year's SIDEBAR stories, but we will have multiple staff members working on multiple SIDEBAR stories for each page, including Teacher's pages, Sports pages, etc. This will allow us to be more flexible with our page assignments and help us to more easily meet our deadlines. Please make sure that this COMPONENT SYSTEM is clear in your creation of your CLICK N GO COMPONENTS.

THE NECESSARY CLICK N GO COMPONENTS and other BOOK ELEMENTS: Here are the elements that you will need to create and then put together for your presentation. You can do more if you wish:

  1. A MOCK-UP OF THE COVER OF THE BOOK: This page will be your idea for the design of the cover of the book, and must contain the words "THE HIGHLANDER" and 2020 on it. This should establish your theme and how it will be addressed visually. USE ANY RESOURCES that you must to create this cover. If you are not looking at LOOK BOOK COVER DESIGN WINNERS, you are not doing your job on this assignment!
  2. COMPONENTS: Please CLICK N GO COMPONENTS for each of the following Yearbook page elements:
    • FOLIOS: These are the little pictures that we use for student coverage on each page (we didn't particularly use these this year, but have in the past.) Feel free to be creative with these, they DO NOT have to be at the bottom of the page!
    • TITLES: What do you want your PAGE TITLES and SUB-TITLES to look like? Please DO NOT settle for plain text titles, be CREATIVE!
    • COMPONENT/SIDEBAR STORIES: These will be major stories on pages that stand out and relate specific information regarding the page. How can we present these next year? PLEASE CREATE AT LEAST TWO DIFFERENT, BUT SIMILAR, STYLES OF COMPONENTS THAT WILL FIT YOUR THEME!
    • INFOGRAPHICS: Include at least one idea for an infographic, that shows the results of a poll, etc.
    • SENIOR PHOTO BLOCK/PAGE: Come up with an idea for a Senior Photo Block or Page Layout for Senior Photos.
    • MUG SHOT PAGES: These pages always end up being just stacks of photos in our books. Please design an alternative that allows us to be more creative with these pages!
    • PHOTO and CAPTION BLOCKS: Come up with an idea for how blocks of photos will be presented on the page, along with the captions that go with them.
    • PAGE NUMBERS/ PAGE AUTHORS: Create a block that contains page numbers. Include page and author information, as well.
    • DIVIDER: This is traditionally THE theme page in a Yearbook, showing the Table of Contents for a section of the book. This could be a CHRONOLOGICAL page, outlining the main events of the season of the book (such as Fall, Spring, etc.) This should SCREAM your theme to viewers, showing most, if not all, of the theme elements used in the book.Come up with at least one idea for how DIVIDERS will be presented, along with the proper PAGE NUMBER/CONTENTS information. Remember, this is supposed to be one of the highlight THEME pages of a Yearbook!
    • INDEX: How can we turn our INDEX page into a feature section of the book, instead of an afterthought?
    • QUOTES: How can highlight page QUOTES be put into your book?

DUE DATE:

This assignment will be presented in class on APRIL 20, 2020. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO WORK ON THIS!
