YEARBOOK THEME/DESIGN ASSIGNMENT

BACKGROUND:

We have been working on creating our yearbook for most of this year and the end is finally in sight. Now, we need to start working on ideas for the book next year.

That being the case, I would like EVERY yearbook student to begin working on a THEME and LAYOUT for the book for the next year. You will be creating a number of pages and layouts tthat match your theme in yearbookavenue.com. We will be presenting all of these layouts in class and voting on them. The winning design/theme will be used for next year's book.

CREATING THE PAGES:

Each student will need to create new PRACTICE PAGES on yearbookavenue.com. To make your pages, simply log in to yearbookavenue.com and select CREATE> PAGE DESIGN from the home page menu. Once the blank page loads, pull down the menu and click SAVE AS PRACTICE PAGE and save your pages with your name: "LASTNAME_CLUB_PAGE". You are now ready to begin creating your page.

THE THEME:  You are responsible for coming up with a THEME for the yearbook, HOWEVER, we would like to have the theme next year be connected with a PHRASE or SAYING, such as "Through Our Eyes" or "Up Close and Personal". The theme would be carried throughout the book, holding pages and layouts together. Our theme this year was "Be_________." You will demonstrate your theme on each page that you create.

RESOURCES: You can use ANY RESOURCES at your disposal (including lookbooks, and other yearbooks, if you wish) create vibrant and interesting yearbook pages with a tightly integrated theme.

THE NECESSARY PAGES: Here are the pages that a required for this assignment. You can do more if you wish:

  1. A MOCK-UP OF THE COVER OF THE BOOK: This page will be your idea for the design of the cover of the book, and must contain the words "THE HIGHLANDER" and 2015 on it. This should establish your theme and how it will be addressed visually.
  2. A DIVIDER PAGE: This is traditionally THE theme page in a Yearbook, showing the Table of Contents for a section of the book. This should scream your theme to viewers, showing most, if not all, of the theme elements used in the book.
  3. A SPORTS PAGE: I don't care what sport you pick. Using photographs from this year, put together a DOUBLE sports page in your theme, complete with captions, story, etc.
  4. A STUDENT LIFE PAGE WITH QUICK READS: Create a flashy, interesting page about some facet of student life. INCLUDE A QUICK READ- a chart or a graph of some sort that follows your theme.
  5. A CHRONOLOGICAL SPREAD LAYOUT: This should cover TWO PAGES and should include at least 4-6 MODULES that report very short stories or events from DIFFERENT SCHOOL ACTIVITIES, such as Academics, Sports, Clubs, Student Life, etc. Make sure that your design includes thematic elements that show PROGRESS THROUGH TIME!
  6. FOLIOS: PLEASE INCORPORATE FOLIOS INTO YOUR SPORTS, ACADEMIC AND STUDENT LIFE PAGES! These are the little pictures that we use for student coverage. Feel free to be creative with these, they DO NOT have to be at the bottom of the page!

EXPECTED ELEMENTS: You MUST include a catchy headline and a sub-headline that inform the reader about the content on your page.

  1. Yor MUST include all elements of an actual yearbook page: TITLE, SUB TITLE, TEXT, PHOTOGRAPHS, CAPTIONS, FOLIO (coverage photographs), etc. in a way that captures and demonstrates your theme on every page.
  2. You can use ANY colors, effects, shapes or fonts that you wish on your page to make it interesting and exciting. This should contribute to your THEME.
  3. You should include a STORY on your page that discusses the events and the photographs on your page. Your story must be logical and sensible for the photographs displayed. Please usee proper grammar, complete sentences and SPELL EVERYTHING CORRECTLY!
  4. You MUST include CAPTIONS for each of your photographs and each caption will include the names of the people in the photograph. You do not know any of these people, so just make up names.
  5. You DO NOT have to follow any jostens themes or ideas, but I STRONGLY RECOMMEND using LOOK BOOKS for ideas for your design, theme and layouts. I am looking for originality and creativity.
