2024- VARSITY YEARBOOK PRACTICE PAGE.

THE ASSIGNMENT: As we are changing Yearbook providers next year, I wanted to give everyone a chance to practice working on the new design program before the end of the year. To that end, we will have a FINAL PROJECT to end the year- the SUMMER ACTIVITY PRACTICE PAGE.

Each student has a login on VARSITY YEARBOOKS. Please log in and go to the DESIGN>PAGES section of the book. Each staff member has a DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD assigned to them. You will use this to create your SUMMER PAGE.

CREATING THE PAGESYou are a member of the yearbook staff and your yearbook editor has asked you to create the "SUMMER ACTIVITIES" double page. She has provided you with a number of 11 different summer photographs, which are already uploaded to the LIBRARY and are available from the CANDIDS tab on the right side of the design screen. Each of these images is already tagged as a SUMMER photograph.

She has also shown you an already created page that shows the THEME of the book, seen below (you can click on this thumbnail to see a larger version, if it will help):

LEARNING TOOLS AND DESIGN TRICKS: This is our first time using the new design site! You will need to figure out how things work as best you can! There are lots of tutorials, if you need them. REMEMBER, THIS IS A LEARNING ACTIVITY FOR ALL OF US! Should you need help, there is LOTS of help on the Varsity site in the LEARN>EDESIGN HELP section.

Using ANY VARSITY DESIGN RESOURCES at your disposal, create a vibrant and interesting yearbook page that FITS IN WITH THE THEMED PAGE ABOVE. YOUR PAGE IS NOT AN EXACT COPY OF THE SAMPLE PAGE, BUT SHOULD LOOK LIKE THEY GO TOGETHER IN THE SAME BOOK! You should be using similar fonts for titles, similar photo layouts and captions and a similar page layout. You can use a different color for your page, but your page would probably be in the same section as the SOCIAL MEDIA page, so would probably be the same color.

THAT BOTTOM STRIPE!: The model page has a short magenta colored stripe running along the page that asks the questions "WHAT'S YOUR HERE?" For YOUR PAGE, your editor would like you to get a number of quotes regarding either "WHAT'S YOUR IDEAL SUMMER JOB?" or "WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE SUMMER ACTIVITY?" You pick whichever one you want to include. Put the answers across the stripe, as in the original. Notice that the BIGGER BLUE stripe has page number, page category and page designer. Yours should, as well.

THE FONTS!: The FONTS used on Mr. B.'s practice page were:

  • SUN title font= ANTIQUE OLIVE COMPACT
  • THE BIG title font= AVALON
  • PAGE NUMBER font= URBANO ULTRA ITALIC

WRITING ON THE PAGE: Please use the captioning rules that we discussed earlier in the year for all of your stories and captions. Here is a quick review, should you need it.

Keep in mind the following points as you create your page:

  1. You can ONLY use the photographs labelled as SUMMER in the image library. You need to use AT LEAST NINE of these photos on your page, each with its own CAPTION OR STORY. You cannot add any other photos. Feel free to resize or reshape your photographs to fit your needs.
  2. Your page is in the STUDENT LIFE SECTION and is supposed to cover SUMMER ACTIVITIES. Your two pages are PAGES 18 and 19.
  3. You are required to create both left side and right side pages in your page design.
  4. You will want to match the fonts used in the headlines of the page as closely as you can. I do not know exactly which fonts these might be on the Varsity site, so get as close as possible!
  5. You MUST include a catchy headline and a sub-headlines that inform the reader about the content and stories on your page.
  6. You should use similar color block shapes on your page to those on the sample. You should use the magenta coloration, because you are in the same section of the book as the sample, but you can change colors, if you must.
  7. You MUST include a MAIN STORY on your page that discusses SUMMER ACTIVITIES. This should be accompanied by a MAIN PHOTO. This story must be AT LEAST a paragraph or two long! Your story must be logical and sensible for the photographs displayed. You MUST use proper grammar, complete sentences and you must SPELL EVERYTHING CORRECTLY!
  8. You MUST include CAPTIONS or MINI-STORIES for all of the other photographs on your page. Each caption will be completed using the proper captioning format discussed in class this semester and outlined above. Captions will include the names of the people in the photograph. You do not know any of these people, so just make up names and grades.
  9. DO NOT follow our current yearbook templates or theme! Use the model above!

SOME VARSITY YEARBOOK DESIGN PAGES TIPS:

  • Even though you can, don't open multiple versions of your page at once. This will cause your pages to be locked to editing.
  • If you see a Yellow Exclamation Point warning on an image, you can turn it off by right clicking and HIDING DPI WARNING. This warning indicates that your photo is not high enough DPI for printing. We will not have this problem with regular photos and pages, only with practice pages and internet stolen images.
  • EDITORS on Varsity can add fonts and colors, but not regular staff. If you really need a particular color or font, ask Mr. B. or Madison or Lacey to help.
  • Text wrap works really well on Varsity, but it can be confusing. If you have two "TEXT WRAPPED" pieces of text, such as a story and a title, they will cancel each other out and one of the two text boxes will disappear with a remaining red X. To fix this, right click on the box that is disappearing and click IGNORE TEXT WRAP.
  • You can turn on grids and snaps easily, by right clicking on the page canvas. Use these to line things up!
  • The image placement tools at the top of the page menu work well, but might be too "canned" for our regular use.
  • The ARRANGE button in the upper menu is great for moving photos and shapes forward or backward. You can even PIN it, if you use it a lot.
  • DOUBLE CLICKING an image will bring up the edit box. This is great for fitting a photo to a frame, rotating a photo, resizing in frame, etc.
  • Need to make a quick copy of an element? Use ALT-CLICK-DRAG, it will make an instant copy of your thing.

FINAL COMPLETION: All staff MUST complete this Final Project, except for graduating Seniors. I do not want to hear any excuses about not knowing how to use the program, none of us know how to use the program! Figure things out!
