Fireworks Basic Photo Manipulation:
"Changing Signs"

Practice: Before starting this assignment, create a “lastname_SIGNS” folder on your network space. All of the files that you create for this assignment (a total of FOUR) will be saved to this folder and submitted.

On the first day of this assignment, students were asked to download a total of THREE different pictures to be altered: stop_sign.jpg, pimple.jpg and grass_dog.jpg. Using the Rubber Stamp and Distort Tools (See Video Tutorials below), create the following photo manipulations:

  1. Grass_dog.jpg: completely erase the dog, so that only grass remains. (10 points)
  2. Pimple.jpg: completely erase the pimple on this girl’s face. (10 points)
  3. Stop_sign.jpg: change the name of the street sign to be YOUR NAME. (30 points)
  4. CHANGING SIGNS: See instructions below for the final product of this assignment. (100 points)

Save these files as listed below in the "Project Submission" section.

The Project:

Students will be using their Fireworks Photo Manipulation skills to create an altered picture of a sign from the following link:

Mr. B.'s Gallery of Signs

Select one of the pictures of signs to work with, then Right-Click on the large version of the sign and save it to your SIGN folder.  You will be changing the sign to say something funny or personal, it is your choice.

A WARNING ABOUT YOUR SIGN SELECTION:  Some of the signs in the gallery will be rather simple to manipulate, some very difficult.  Select one that is suited to your skill and temperment in Fireworks.  If you select an easy sign, I expect your manipulation to be PERFECT for a decent grade!

Main Aim of this Project:  Is to create a realistic photomanipulation involving the changing of a street or store sign.  The better your manipulation is, the better your grade will be.  If I can see your sloppy brush strokes and poor color manipulations, you will receive a very poor grade!

Techniques to be Used:

1. Students will need to use the Rubber Stamp tool to erase the backgrounds of their original sign.
2. Students will need to use the “Distort” Tool to change the perspective of the lettering of the signs as needed.
3. Students might need to use lines and shapes to alter sign images.
4. Students might need to use “Filters>Adjust Color> Hue and Saturation” to adjust the tonal quality of their images.
5. Students might need to add blur “Filters>Blur>Gaussian Blur” to an image to make edges of letters a little softer to match with sign background.
6. Save completed sign as “Lastname_sign.jpg” and put it in your lastname_SIGNS folder (50 points)

Project Submission:

Projects should be saved to your lastname_SIGNS folder and should include ALL of the following four four images:
