Fireworks Photomanipulation:
"The Cereal Box"

The Project: Students will be using their Fireworks Skills to create a "homemade" label for a box of cereal that makes fun of that product or some social convention.

Sample Product ParodiesFor inspiration, the students were shown a slide show of parody products.

Getting Started: Create a folder on your network space called “lastname_cereal” from our last assignment. Save all original files, plus your final product file, to this folder.

First Thing: Download the files below and save them to your "lastname_cereal" folder:

Open the KITTY picture in Fireworks. Watch the

Video Tutorial regarding Fireworks Blending Brushes

and change the color of the kitty's eyeballs. Then save the kitty to your “lastname_cereal” folder. Call it "lastname_kitty.jpg." (10 points)

The Base of Your Cereal Box Label: The students will create the label for their new "cereal" in Fireworks, using Vector Shape tools, much like we did in the Webpage Emulation Project. You will be using the KIX_CEREAL_BOX photograph as your starting point. Please create your cereal box so that it completely covers and takes the place of the KIX box on the shelf.

Masked Images:

The students must use at least one masked image to create their cereal box. Remember, Google is a terrible place to locate quality photographs. Please try one of the following websites instead:

FINAL PRODUCT PARODY ELEMENTS that must be Included:

  1. You must include a CEREAL NAME, using TEXT, FILLS and STROKES. (20 Points)
  2. You must include a MASKED picture/photograph that pertains to your brand of cereal. (20 Points)
  3. You must include the weight and/or volume or cereal in your cereal box. (10 Points)
  4. You must include the manufacturer's name of your cereal box.  (10 Points)
  5. You can include any appropriate government warning stickers.
  6. Your Cereal Box should include an appropriate PRIZE inside, properly labelled on the front of your box. (10 points)
  7. Your cereal box should probably include a photograph of some cereal or a cereal bowl. Somewhere. You can use your own photographs, if you wish. Not absolutely necessary, as some real cereal boxes do not include this, but not very many.
  8. Your cereal box should be well spaced out, with all elements sensibly placed on the canvas. (20 Points)

Techniques to be Used:

Students should try to use the indicated tools and techniques below at least once in their work (links will open Video Tutorials for the required techniques):

  1. Cutting images from their backgrounds using the MASK Tool.
  2. SHAPE and LINE Tools.
  3. Letters or shapes with FILLS and STROKES.
  4. Changing the color of all or a portion of an image using BLENDING brushes.
  5. Altering the perspective of an object in the work (by using the DISTORT Tool.)
  6. Adding blur to the image (FILTER>BLUR>GAUSSIAN BLUR)
  7. Manipulating parts of the image using the RUBBER STAMP Tool.
