AutoCAD: The Non-Test Midterm Examination

BEFORE YOU START: Create a new folder in your AUTOCAD folder, called “lastname_nontest”. Save the following figures into this folder, call them ARCHWAY.dwg and HOUSE.dwg.

A NOTE TO NON-TEST TAKERS:  This is liable to be one of the more difficult projects that you have been given in your High School career.  That is OK.  Take your work one step at a time and you will be fine!  Remember, I am looking for QUALITY, not QUANTITY on the Houses!

THE NON-TEST MIDTERM PROBLEMS:

PROBLEM ONE: The Archway Problem (50 Points): Replicate the Archway, make sure to make use of such commands as MIRROR, OFFSET, ARC, etc. Here is a digital version of the Archway.  There will also be a hardcopy version for you to examine.

    • PLEASE NOTE:  To type in the words "ARCHWAY-1785" in the plaque, follow these steps:
      • Click the FORMAT Menu from the top Menu Bar, click TEXT STYLES...
      • On the right side of the dialogue box, click in the HEIGHT box and put in a very small number, such as ".05".
      • Click APPLY and CLOSE.
      • To draw the TEXT BOX for creating your letters and numbers, Click the TEXT button (Large Capital A).
      • Click and drag a box into which your letters and numbers will appear, click to open the text dialogue box.
      • From the FONT HEIGHT drop down box, click on your small font height: 0.05.
      • Type your text: "ARCHWAY, 1785"
      • Click and drag your text box as needed to position it properly in your plaque.

WHEN YOU HAVE FINISHED PROBLEM ONE, SEE MR. B.  HE WILL ASSIGN YOU THE HOUSE YOU WILL BE WORKING ON FOR PROBLEM TWO!

PROBLEM TWO: The HOUSE Problem (100 Points)- There are two versions of "The House Problem," one that is slightly easier, with fewer details and another which is more involved and decorative.   You will be assigned which house you are to work on based upon your demonstrated abilities in class to date.  The key is that there isn't anything in either drawing that you cannot do! Make sure to use ALL the commands at your disposal, such as MIRROR, OFFSET, FILLET, COPY, etc.!

Your job is to do the very best that you can to EXACTLY REPLICATE the house that you have been assigned.  Every line and every box must be included.  I will be grading heavily based upon the amount of work that you put into the project, as well as the QUALITY of the work created.

If it helps, you are allowed to use a ruler to get basic dimensions. I highly recommend you use the METRIC side of the ruler and measure in Millimeters!

The SIMPLE House:

The COMPLEX House:

A COMMAND YOU NEED TO KNOW TO COMPLETE THESE HOUSES:  I have put together a Video Tutorial: Using the AutoCAD HATCH Command, that will help you put the roof shingles and stones on your houses.

A NOTE TO THOSE WORKING ON THE COMPLEX HOUSE:  I would like to see you make an effort to create the filigreed railings by the doors and windows of your house.  I recommend creating them off to the side or on a separate files and copying them to where they need to go.  You will need to use lots of freehand ARCs to complete these.  The good news is that once you create one little filigree (curley thing), you can copy, paste, rotate and mirror it all over to make your railing decorations.

SUBMITTING YOUR WORK: When you have completed both figures, copy your entire “lastname_nontest” folder to the M: Drive DROPBOX for your class period.

GRADING: You will be graded based upon the quality of your ARCHWAY and HOUSE, as well as your work ethic in completing the project.  150 points total!
