klAutoCAD Assignment 14: Basic 3D Drawing in AutoCAD.

Before you begin: First, create a “lastname_autoCAD_14” folder on your network space for this assignment. Save all of the following drawings into this folder.

The Tutorials: Like the last AutoCAD Assignment, there are some technique video tutorials to start out, then some actual 3D modeling tutorials that will include use of materials to make your models look realistic. I have placed copies of these videos in the Q: Drive, in their own 3D MODELING FOLDER. Use these if needed. For the first two videos, please watch each one in order and DRAW FIGURES AS DEMONSTRATED IN THE VIDEOS. Save these drawings as noted in each problem, please make sure you save them with the names listed! This will be the "work" for much of this assignment.

The Problems:

PROBLEM 1: View the video tutorial below regarding the REVOLVE command. Save the figures that you create from the tutorial as "REVOLVE.dwg" in your AutoCAD 14 folder.

PROBLEM 2: View the video tutorials below regarding the SWEEP command. Save the figures that you draw for this tutorial as "SWEEP.dwg" in your AutoCAD 14 folder.

PROBLEM 3: For this problem, students will have a choice between creating one of two different 3D objects.

THE COUCH: This tutorial is a little more basic, with very clear and specific directions for every step, but does NOT include instructions on how to render the couch in woodgrain and red leather, sorry. The tutorial is also a little longer and is split into two parts. Please add the red, brown and silver colors to your final product as outlined in the "Materials, Lighting and Rendering" video tutorial (below). Save the figure that you create from the tutorial as "COUCH.dwg" in your AutoCAD 14 folder. If you RENDER your couch with materials and lighting, please save your render image to that folder, as well.

THE HAMMER: This tutorial is more advanced and does include instructions on how to use materials to render the hammer realistically. While the video tutorial is much shorter, it also does NOT provide step by step instruction and does not have ANY voice instructions, only onscreen demonstrations. If you are doing well at following video tutorials and have a good feel for what we are doing with 3D Modeling, try this video! Save the figure that you create from the tutorial as "HAMMER.dwg" in your AutoCAD 14 folder.

PROBLEM 4- CHALLENGE PROBLEM: This is a little more advanced video, with some new techniques that we have yet to tackle. A few notes:

  1. Make sure that you EXPLODE the TREAD after you use POLAR ARRAY on it, or you will not be able to subtract the way indicated in the video.
  2. Also, we have not covered LAYERS yet this semester, so you will have to try to keep up with the instructions regarding new layers as best you can.
  3. The video does not indicate exactly how to apply the "black." See if you can figure out how to apply a "MATTE BLACK PAINT" surface color to your tire using the "MATBROWSEROPEN" Command and searching for "BLACK".
