FUSION 360, LESSON ONE: BASICS- SKETCH, EXTRUDE, SHELL, PATTERN and MATERIALS

BEFORE YOU START: Create a new folder on your network space, called FUSION_360. In this FUSION_360 folder, create another new folder called “LESSON_1”.

You will need to EXPORT your drawings as .F3D files and save them to your LESSON_1 folder for grading!

THE RELEVANT VIDEO TUTORIALS: You will NEED to watch this video to be able to complete this assignment.

Here is the link to the webpage for this video tutorial, complete with transcript. Use this if you need it!

PROBLEM 1: Complete the "TOY BLOCK" exactly as in the video.

Make sure that you do all of the HOUSEKEEPING TASKS, such as making folders, etc. at the beginning. This is important to keep you organized!

When you are done creating the TOY BLOCK, review my video on MATERIALS below, to add some color to your block (feel free to be creative here!):

SAVE YOUR DRAWING WHEN COMPLETE AS TOY_BLOCK.F3D to your LESSON_1 FOLDER.

PROBLEM 2: Your first solo Fusion 360 project is one you have seen before, but now it is time to create it for real. Please recreate our "WOOD BLOCK" from the first week of school. I expect this to be properly dimensioned through all three dimensions. I would also like you to use the APPEARANCE command to give your block a WOODEN look by applying a MATERIAL.

You should be using the following techniques to create this block:

  • SKETCH AND EXTRUDE- You will need to create a number of sketches that are extruded to make this block.
  • You will need to properly use SKETCH DIMENSIONING to be able to make this true to original shape. On my version below, I used two sketches, one of the front of the block and another of the side. EDIT SKETCH as needed to adjust your dimensions.
  • I recommend sketching the RECTANGLE at the top of the block first, then add the CIRCLE, using 2-point circle. This is easier than doing the circle first.
  • For the PHYSICAL MATERIAL, you will need to find a good WOOD texture and possibly SCALE the pattern, so that it looks like actual wood.

Your WOOD BLOCK should look like the model below. When it does, SAVE YOUR DRAWING WHEN COMPLETE AS WOOD_BLOCK.F3D to your LESSON_1 FOLDER.

PROBLEM 3: Your next solo Fusion 360 drawing is the following: create a 3D rendering of a dice. Below are some sample dice for you to consider. YOUR dice can look any way that you wish, however, remember that OPPOSING SIDES OF A DICE ALWAYS ADD UP TO 7! Your die can be have rounded edges, large pips, whatever makes you happy! For THIS PROJECT, I would highly recommend the following:

  • Use the EXTRUDE COMMAND for the pips (dots) on your dice). CHALLENGE PROBLEM- Pips in dice are not really extruded, but rounded. Try using the video at THIS LINK to create rounded pips!
  • Use the Rectangular Pattern that you learned with the TOY BLOCK to your advantage.
  • Fillet the edges of your dice AT THE END of the project, not the beginning.
  • Please use APPEARANCE and MATERIALS to make your die look cool and interesting!
  • Be patient! This problem is a LOT harder than it looks to do it efficiently.

The die above is Mr. B.'s die, complete with Mirrored edges and Blue and White Powder Coat surfaces.

SAVE YOUR DRAWING WHEN COMPLETE AS DICE.F3D to your LESSON_1 FOLDER.

SUBMITTING YOUR WORK: I will grade all of the problems for FUSION_360_LESSON_1 Directly out of your folder on your COLOR Drive.

GRADING: I will be grading FUSION_360 work in the following way. I will be grading your completed assignments and figures each week. As there are only going to be 3 figures for each assignment, all assignments will be worth 60 points, 20 points for each of the practice problem and the independent problems.
