Computers and Technology:
Canva Project- The NOT Husky Mascot Project

Overview of the Project: We have been working on Canva, using our new design skills and our new AI Image generation skills. You have already created a nice HUSKY LOGO for a sport or a club at Highland High School.

Getting Started: First, go to CANVA.com and log in with your SCHOOL EMAIL.You will probably want to just start a blank, square canvas, such as an INSTAGRAM POST.

HISTORY INFORMATION: For THIS mascot project, you will be delving back into the history of the High Schools in this part of Weld County. Here is the story:

Starting in the very early 1900s, three different High Schools in the Northern Weld County area were built, one in Pierce (the current Elementary School), one in Nunn (which burned down in 1974 or 1975) and the last in Ault (the current Highland Middle School.) The cool thing about these schools is that they each had their own identity, mascots and school colors. With some research, Mr. B. has found out that the schools were represented as follows:

    • PIERCE HIGH SCHOOL: Home of the "PIERCE BULLDOGS," School mascot was a BULLDOG and the school colors were BLUE AND GOLD.
    • NUNN HIGH SCHOOL: Home of the "NUNN TERRORS," School mascot was a HEADLESS HORSEMAN and the school colors were ORANGE and BLACK.
    • AULT HIGH SCHOOL: Home of the "AULT BEARCATS," School mascot was a BEARCAT (a fictional, fierce-looking hybrid of a bear and a cat) and the school colors were BLACK and CHERRY RED.

THE PROJECT: For THIS mascot project, please create a PROFESSIONAL LOOKING SET of THREE different mascots, one for each of the schools listed above. Here are your REQUIRED ELEMENTS:

    1. A professional looking mascot that matches the descriptions above. These should be AWESOME looking! The kind of thing you wouldn't mind wearing as a hoodie or a putting on your phone as a phone case!
    2. Your mascot should be framed, most likely in a CIRCLE, but a SQUARE might be appropriate, depending on your design.
    3. Your mascot should include text that reads "AULT BEARCATS" or "NUNN TERRORS" or "PIERCE BULLDOGS." Do not try to make these specific to any sport or club, just a generic mascot and school name would be perfect!
    4. Make sure that your mascot logo has a TRANSPARENT BACKGROUND and is DOWNLOADED as a PNG file. I will post an UPLOAD form for this next class period.

SOME NOTES ABOUT YOUR MASCOTS: This project is MUCH harder than you might think to get right. Here are some tips:

  • You will probably have to create each logo a number of times to get it right, so I would recommend using PARTYROCK with AMAZON NOVA CANVAS settings and HIGH STRICTNESS!
  • AULT BEARCATS MASCOT: This one is very tough, because AI struggles to make a mix between a bear and a cat. I RECOMMEND asking for either a BEAR BODY/ CAT HEAD or a CAT BODY/ BEAR HEAD.
  • You MIGHT even try creating an image of a WEREWOLF and see if that looks like a "BEARCAT." You could try to look up what the University of Cincinnati Bearcat looks like, but that might not be very useful.
  • NUNN TERRORS MASCOT: If you use the term "HEADLESS HORSEMAN," AI will insist on putting a pumpkin in the image, likely as the rider's head. THERE SHOULD NOT BE A PUMPKIN ON THIS MASCOT!
  • I recommend using a query for a "hooded, caped horseback rider, without a face under the hood."
  • I actually think that my "TERROR" is a little too fancy, I would take out some of the frills to make it look more streamlined.
  • PIERCE BULLDOGS: The way easiest of the three. Make sure it looks fierce and has the proper colors!
  • You could create this as a full body mascot, like the ones above, if it makes more sense to you.
  • WHEN YOU GENERATE YOU IMAGES, take them to CANVA and add the proper text. FIND FONTS THAT HAVE SOME CHARACTER TO THEM!
  • DO NOT JUST COPY THESE MASCOTS, PLEASE PUT IN THE TIME TO PROPERLY CREATE YOUR OWN!

PLEASE NOTE THAT DALL-E WILL PROBABLY ONLY LAST FOR THREE ROUNDS OF IMAGE GENERATION, THEN YOU WILL BE BOXED OUT!

The good news is that DALL•E does a great job of creating EXACTLY what you ask for and can even handle NUMBERS and LETTERS! For example, here is a prompt that I entered to get a cartoon image of a cartoon Husky basketball player. NOTICE THE DETAIL IN MY QUERY!

THE TOOL YOU SHOULD USE: CANVA has a very useful and fairly decent DELETE BACKGROUND tool, USE IT TO CREATE YOUR LOGO!

SUBMITTING YOUR WORK: PLEASE NOTE: If your NON-HUSKY LOGOS DO NOT LOOK AWESOME, I DON'T WANT IT. THIS SHOULD BE SOMETHING THAT, IF IT WERE A STICKER, YOU WOULD BE EXCITED TO PUT ON YOUR CHROMEBOOK, BECAUSE IT LOOKS SO COOL!

When you have created your NON-HUSKY LOGOS please SHARE>DOWNLOAD>PNG and then upload it to your COMPTECH folder for grading. This will be a 75 point project.
