Computers and Technology:
Canva Project- The Company Advertisement

Overview of the Project: We have recently gotten access to a very useful tool for high school students to complete projects- canva.com. This website offers complete beginners a chance to create any type of design project, from advertisements, flyers, posters, timelines, Youtube outros, etc.

Getting Started: First, go to CANVA.com and log in with your SCHOOL EMAIL. Notice that you have access to a bunch of different tools and templates on the home page. Try searching for a "SALE" or "GRAND OPENING" TEMPLATE. Pick one that is interesting and catchy. You will be modifying it to fit a particular business, below.

Your Business: For this project, you are playing the role of a new small business owner, who is opening their store for the very first time. You can pick from any of the business (complete with descriptions) below. Yes, you MUST pick one of the businesses below for your company.

The Project: Your assignment is to create a "GRAND OPENING SALE" poster/advertisement, using CANVA tools, based on the information below. Your poster MUST include all of the following elements:

  1. AI generated images of your products or images associated with your company, prominently displayed.
  2. The name of your business.
  3. The company website for your business (you are allowed to make this up!)
  4. The address and phone number of your business (you can also make this up, but make sure that it fits the proper format for an address: 123 Main Street, Ault, CO, 80610, for example!).
  5. The hours of your business.
  6. The DATE of the grand opening (THIS NEEDS TO BE THE DAY AFTER OUR LAST SCHOOL DAY THIS SEMESTER!)

Learning CANVA: You will be using a few of Canva's own learning tools and tutorials, linked below. There is a LARGE HELP MENU in Canva, use it as needed (keep in mind that the Canva video tutorials linked on the site are on YouTube, so you will have to use your phone to watch them!)

  1. Getting started with Canva.
  2. Easy editing in Canva.
  3. Saving and Sharing Designs in Canva.

Starting the Project: You will probably want to start by finding an appropriate TEMPLATE to use to create your advertisement. I recommend going to the CANVA home screen and searching for something like the following: "BUSINESS ADVERTISEMENT," "BUSINESS GRAND OPENING," or "COMPANY FLYER." Select a template that looks PROFESSIONAL and MODERN. Make sure that there is room in your template for some images!

Generating AI Images: Once you have created your TEMPLATE for your advertisement, click ELEMENTS, then scroll down to the AI IMAGE GENERATOR section and click on GENERATE YOUR OWN. You will have a limited number of free image generations, so make sure you enter good prompts! I suggest very specific prompts, such as:

  • "A photographic image showing two fancy donuts, sitting on a small plate on a wooden table, with a cup of steaming hot coffee nearby."
  • "A cartoon image of a lion riding a bicycle through the jungle."
  • "A black and white photograph image of a vase of red roses sitting on a large stone in a grass courtyard."

Use your AI generated image in your ADVERTISEMENT. This can be a photograph of your product, a representation of your logo, a photo of your shop, etc. Your AI image needs to look professional and accurate. No weird AI images with melting hands or cows with 7 legs, please!
