Media Productions Project 5- "The Product"

Premise: We have been learning how to script, shoot video and use Vegas Movie Studio editing software. Now, we will put all of these together. Students will produce and direct, from the ground up, a 30-60 second commercial for a fictitious product. They will type up a Treatment for their commercial idea, script the commercial, direct it, film it, edit it and add music and closing graphics.

Each student will pick their own product to advertise on their commercial. These products are completely fictitious and may not even be functional objects. It is the student's job to come up with a use for the product, as well as a commercial idea that can be used to sell the product.

As students cannot act in their own commercial, it is expected that each student will act in at least ONE other student's commercial.

The Products: Pick the product you would like to use. Each student will be filming for a different product. First Come, First Served!

BigPurple Pointy Sticks: Dalton
Amazo-swat
Fly Swatters: Chris
Blanzo Orange Tubes
Comedica Miracle Pills: Kendra
Johnson Screw Drivers: Kyle
X-OUT Golf Balls
Mysterio Computer Equipment
Renco Zapgadget: Mikayla

The Treatment: A "Treatment" is a written version that outlines the film or video that you wish to make. The Treatment tells the story, the settings, the characters, the plot and the purpose of your idea. In the film industry, these tend to be 30-40 page works that are used to pitch ideas to executives in the hopes of getting them interested in a project.

Your treatment should be at least a half of a page typed, outlining what you want to film and why.

I highly recommend that you are very conservative with your settings and dialogue. It would be best if your commercial could be filmed on campus during class with other class members as actors.

The Script: Once your Treatment has been approved, you will need to script your commercial. Make sure to include all timing, camera angles, dialogue and setting information. You will be producing and filming your commercial. I expect your final project to very closely match the script! Make sure to print a copy of your script to submit for project credit! You might want to use these links to help with your scripting:

Filming and Sound: Once your Script is complete, start shooting your footage for your video. REMEMBER, YOU CANNOT ACT IN YOUR OWN COMMERCIAL! You will be shooting exactly what was listed in your script, including dialogue, actions, props, etc. PLEASE use cue cards for your actors.

You will probably want some sound and music in your commercial. If you need special effects sounds, you can get those from a sound clip website, such as any of these:

  • Flashkit.com: A good site for sound fx and loops of all sorts.
  • freesound.com: An online collaborative, with tons of great content, a little hard to navigate, though, try searching for the sound you need.
  • soundsnap.com:  You will need to actually record the music from this site, you cannot just download.

If you include music, make sure that your music compliments the feel of your commercial, but does not overwhelm it.

Props and Logos: Mr. B. will provide you with your product to use as a prop. However, it may not have a proper box and the product does not have a logo. You will need a logo for your product for the closing graphics. If you have used Fireworks or Photoshop, you can create your own. If not, you will need to find someone in the class that is willing to help you, maybe in exchange for acting in their commercial, etc.

Save your logo as a .JPEG file and import it into Vegas for use in your Closing Graphics.

Editing: Once you have your footage complete, edit your clips, sound and music together to create a convincing commercial that will encourage viewers to buy your product. Make sure to include closing graphics! Although commercials do not usually have titles and credits, please include these, so that we know who did the work on your project.

Saving and Submitting: Make sure to MAKE MOVIE and save a copy of the final version to the V: Drive DROPBOX, put your name on the final version.
