"School Safety" Unit Assignments

BACKGROUND: We have been working with the cameras and film for almost a year now. All students should have a sound working knowledge of how to film, import files, edit, add sound and effects and create movies and comics.

PRODUCT REQUIREMENTS:

  1. The Safety Groups will be responsible for creating THREE 1-5 minute Public Service Announcement films on three different topics. The films will be addressing a particular theme and carry a message.
  2. The three themes are targeting different audiences:
    • One theme is “Peer Pressure” and is targeting 3rd-5th Graders
    • One theme is “Drugs” and is aimed at 6th to 8th grade students.
    • The last theme is “Alcohol” and is aimed at the High School student population.
  3. In addition to creating a film or comic that is targeted at the concept, we also need to generate a “teaching guide” for use with their product. The “teaching guide” should be an instruction sheet for a teacher using the film in the classroom as to how the film could and should be presented, what issues and questions might come up after watching the film with students, what follow-up exercises should a teacher use to reinforce the message of the film and so forth.
  4. Remember, we are trying to create a useful tool that can be used in our school district as a positive influence over kids. You are high school students in this district, all of the other kids at the Middle School and Elementary School look up to you and idolize you. Let’s create material with a positive message that will have a positive impact on our school and our neighborhood.
  5. The target age for your films are Middle School and High School! YOUR WORK MUST BE APPROPRIATE FOR THOSE AGE GROUP IN EVERY WAY! No swearing, no violence, no glorification of DRUGS or ALCOHOL. Try to address the issues in a grown up, but contemporary, way that kids will be able to relate to.
  6. Preliminary research into the issues and the predominant message regarding PEER PRESSURE, DRUGS and ALCOHOL should be conducted before making any final product plans. Know what you are talking about in this area before you create a film that will influence others!
  7. Each film/comic should have, at minimum, the following:
    • A written TREATMENT, submitted before filming begins, that outlines the ideas and subjects of your film. This should be in paragraph form and should be well-written and carefully thought out. This MUST be approved by Mr. B. before you start working.
    • A SCRIPT: This should be a fairly detailed and well thought out plan of action for the production of your film. You have a film pictured in your head that you would like to create, the SCRIPT outlines and organizes your thoughts for you. Do NOT go out randomly shooting film and hoping that you catch something good enough for a movie! AGAIN, this MUST BE APPROVED before you start filming by Mr. B.
    • Filming and Editing: Get your shots, film your scenes, use the 10+1 rules! Use transitions and effects if they ADD to your movie!
    • Add sound and music if it adds to your movie.
    • Opening Title, Closing Credits.
    • A TEACHING GUIDE, discussed above. This should be a written outline that will help a teacher that has never seen your film or thought about your issues understand how to use this film as a teaching tool in the classroom.
    • Burn your movie out as an MPG or Export your Comic from Comic Life as JPGs. Turn in your work!
