"Graphic Design: Cover Design for Highland Athletics"

THE PROJECT: We have been working on some Graphic Design Principles of both Unity and Emphasis. We now have the chance to use these principles in a real-life application. Mr. Seaney would like our Graphic Design class to design the cover of the Highland Athletics Weights Manual. This cover will be used for all of the Weights Manuals that the school will be printing in the near future for use in Physical Education classes and with the various Highland Sports Teams that will be using the Weight Room.

Here are the SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS regarding the creation of the Manual Cover:

  • The Cover should include the following five photographs, in some fashion:
  • The Cover will include the words "Highland Athletics" and "Weights Manual" prominently in a readable font.
  • The Cover will include either the Highland Husky H Logo or the plain Highland H Logo.
  • The Cover should include the colors Green (#014a2d) and Gold (#ab926a). Use these colors in fonts and graphics as you deem necessary.
  • The cover should be created on an 8.5 x 11 inch canvas in Photoshop.
  • The cover should use the Principles of Unity and Emphasis that we learned a week or so ago and look clean and professional when completed!
  • The cover should NOT include anything inappropriate to the subject matter, which is Highland Athletics and Weight Training. Nothing creepy, no pictures of your girlfriend or favorite rap star, no guns, no crack pipes, no trippy designs. Anything turned in that is inappropriate in any way will be given a ZERO immediately and will likely be referred to Mr. Yaussi for further action.
  • The cover can include a very small "lastname, 2010" in the lower right corner, giving you credit for your design for all to see for years to come!

CREATION and SUBMISSION OF THE COVER: Be creative with the creation of your cover! Feel free to use Shapes, Filters, Layer Effects, or anything else that will make your cover look amazing and professional at the same time. When you are done with your cover, save it as a JPEG and call it:

and put it into the DROPBOX.

Mr. B. will select THREE students' cover designs to present to Mr. Seaney, who will select the final cover design.

GRADING: This project will be graded on the following criteria:

  • Project submitted and there is evidence of thought, creativity and effort: 100/100 points.
  • Project not submitted: 0/100 points.
  • Anything else: 50/100 points.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS: Any student that has their design selected as one of the THREE FINALISTS will automatically have their LOWEST SEMESTER GRADE (higher than a ZERO) dropped from the gradebook at the end of the semester. The student who has their design selected for final printing of the cover of the manual will have their lowest grade for the semester turned into an 100%/A.
