The Graphic Design Course Pre-test/Post-Test

BACKGROUND:

Because of new state requirements, we will be conducting a "Pre-test" and a "Post-test" in Graphic Design, which will enable us to see what progress you have made in the art of Graphic Design over the course of the year.  You will be asked to complete a very similar assignment at the end of the year.

THE ASSIGNMENT:

Today, you will be creating a "Poster" that explains and illustrates a word. The words are all geographic in nature and can be researched at the following website:

To illustrate your poster, you will be able to use any resources that you wish, including the following:

  • Any technology tool or computer program from our network, such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Powerpoint (sorry, we do not have Publisher in this room), Fireworks, etc.
  • Paper, pencils, magazines, pens, markers, if you have NO other tool options at your disposal.
  • Any other media that you wish to deliver your message.  Be creative!

LOOKING STUFF UP: Please research the meaning of your term. If the Geography Dictionary is not sufficient, you can use any other online resources needed to understand your word.

THE POSTER: Your Poster MUST include the following information, laid out in an eye-catching and appealing way that is easy to read and understand:

    1. Your Word
    2. The Dictionary definition of your word.
    3. An ILLUSTRATION of the definition of your word. Show me, in pictures, what your word means.
LAYOUT AND GRAPHICS: The purpose of a POSTER is to INFORM the viewer and explain the word in written and picture form. It should also be bold and interesting, with eye-catching graphics. These can be of whatever form you like.

THE POSTER SIZE:  Your work must be a created on an 8 1/2 x 11 inch sheet of paper. If you create your work in a computer program, such as Word, etc., please PRINT your final product.

DUE DATE: This assignment will be due on Tuesday, the 20th of August! Please give me your best effort. REMEMBER THE RULES ABOUT LATE WORK!

GRADING: I will be grading this one pretty simply:

• Final Product shows strong evidence of thought, design and effort= 50 points.
• Final Product shows little evidence of thought, shoddy effort and a poor visual presentation=  0 points.
