The Graphic Design Course Pre-test/Post-Test

BACKGROUND:

Because of new state requirements, we will be conducting a "Pre-test" and a "Post-test" in Graphic Design, which will enable us to see what progress you have made in the art of Graphic Design over the course of the year.  You will be asked to complete a very similar (if not identical) assignment at the end of the year.

THE ASSIGNMENT:

Today, you will be creating a "Poster" that advertises an event.  You will be able to use any resources that you wish, including the following:

  • Any technology tool or computer program from our network, such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Powerpoint (sorry, we do not have Publisher in this room), Fireworks, etc.
  • Paper, pencils, magazines, pens, markers, if you have NO other tool options at your disposal.
  • Any other media that you wish to deliver your message.  Be creative!

LOOKING STUFF UP: Please DO NOT go online and find out what the actual event poster looks like and try to copy it. I want you to use only your creativity and skills to complete this assignment.

THE EVENT:  Your Poster MUST include the following text information, laid out in an eye-catching and appealing way that is easy to read and understand:

    1. Event Title:  "The 2012 Mountain of the Sun Music Festival"
    2. Event Location:  Aspen Valley Ranch, Woodland Park, Colorado
    3. Dates:  Saturday, September 8th, 2012.
    4. Attractions:
      • Featuring "The Greencards" with
      • Sierra Hull & Highway 111 and
      • The Dixie Bee-Liners
      • and featuring the amazing bicycle powered "Mobile Music Project."
    5. Tagline: "There's nothing like listening to homegrown Americana roots music on America's mountain!"
LAYOUT AND GRAPHICS: The purpose of a POSTER is to attract the attention of a viewer and make them want to investigate the information on the poster further. To do this, you will need some bold, interesting, eye-catching graphics. These can be of whatever form you like.

THE POSTER SIZE:  Your work must be a created on an 8 1/2 x 11 inch sheet of paper or electronic document.

DUE DATE: This assignment will be due on May 12th! Please give me your best effort and demonstrate all of your learning for this year!

GRADING: I will be grading this one pretty simply:

• Final Product shows strong evidence of thought, design and effort= 100 points.
• Final Product shows little evidence of thought, shoddy effort and a poor visual presentation=  0 points.
