"The Establishment Clause Case Study Discussion Groups" Project

BACKGROUND: For this assignment, you will be working in groups of TWO (although you may work alone, if you wish) to analyze case studies regarding the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. Students will use their knowledge of the 1st Amendment, as well as additional research, as needed to answer a number of "Essential Questions" regarding their case.

THE CASES: HERE IS A LINK TO THE CASE STUDIES. There are 8 cases to consider, most with such interesting issues as animal sacrifice, Skeleton Santas, use of peyote in religious ceremonies and Evolution vs. Creationism. Students/Groups will be responsible for reviewing and answering case study questions for THREE of these cases. DO NOT REVIEW THE DETAILS OF THE OTHER CASES!

PLEASE NOTE: Groups or students that select the case with the least students reviewing will receive 25 extra credit points. If there is collusion, this offer will be rescinded by Mr. B.!

THE QUESTIONS: Students will complete their research and analysis and answer the Essential Questions in writing, using well-thought out paragraphs and proper sentences. Students should have a STRONG working knowledge of all applicable information in their case, including application of the Four Establishment Clause Tests as outlined by the Supreme Court and HOW THEY APPLY TO YOUR CASE.

CASE REVIEW: Students will be asked to present their case to the rest of the class in a manner that allows the other students to discuss both sides of the issue and then give opinions.

When the case is over and the information has been presented, analyzed and discussed by the class, ALL class members MAY BE (depending upon class participation in discussions) responsible for answering the Essential Questions of the other cases in the class and turning them in for grading.

SUBMISSION:  Submit all written answers to the Essential Questions of all of the cases in your class. Although students will be working in groups, each MUST turn in their own answers to the questions.

GRADING:  This assignment will be worth a total of 100 points- 50 points for the thoughtful completion of all of the written Essential Questions and 50 points for the presentation of the case to the class and the facilitation of the discussion sessions.
