ASSIGNMENT: This
assignment for Civil Government will involve
the powers of Congress. Students must
not only CORRECTLY answer all of the questions below, but must explain
their reasoning while CITING the appropriate sections of Article I, Section 8 of
the Constitution.
PRESENTATION OF THE FINAL PRODUCT: Students must also PRESENT their information
in a professional, easily read and understood manner (a nice table would likely be most appropriate.) Students may use any presentation vehicle that they deem appropriate, but these will need to be shared, forwarded or submitted to Mr. B. for grading.
THE QUESTIONS: DESCRIBE which of the 18 powers
of Congress would be used in each of the following scenarios. CITE the
exact
parts of Article
I, Section 8
of
the Constitution that relates to the scenario. If you are claiming that the ELASTIC CLAUSE or the INTERSTATE COMMERC CLAUSE is in play, please DESCRIBE HOW each of these issues is in effect.
- Congress passes a federal law adopting the metric system as the official measurement system of the United States.
- Congress establishes the US Space Force department of the military, which will work alongside the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines to engage enemies through the use of drones and satellite technology.
- Congress passes a bill creating a new national park in Missouri.
- Congress increases the penalty for using color copier machines to copy United States paper money.
- Congress passes a bill that eliminates the Post Office and allows all mail to be subcontracted to UPS instead.
- Congress creates federal laws limiting pollution from wood burning fireplaces to improve air quality.
- Congress passes a federal law increasing the Minimum Wage to $15.00 for all employees.
- Congress passes an immigration reform bill that sets up a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants in the United States.
- Congress passes a bill that allows inventors to protect their patents for 25 years instead of only 17 years.
- Congress creates a federal law instituting mandatory military service for all citizens at the age of 19.
- Congress authorizes a new three dollar bill.
- Congress passes a bill that authorizes purchase of land in Alaska to be used to build a new naval facility.
- Congress passes a resolution allowing the military to perform targeted drone strikes in Syria, designed to target terrorist strongholds in the War on Terror.
- Congress passes a bill which allows for an increase in the national debt ceiling to 42.0 trillion dollars.
- Congress passes a federal law that authorizes a new section of the interstate highway system in Nebraska.
- Congress passes the Fully Armed School Zone Act allowing any trained school staff or faculty member to be able to open carry a weapon on school grounds.
GRADING: The Powers Questionnaire will be graded for accuracy in each scenario, reasoning and explanations of all answers and professional presentation.
