GRAPHIC DESIGN: "The UNITY/EMPHASIS Ads"

Premise: This is the first of a series of assignments which will help the students learn how to convey information in a properly laid out format using standard Graphic Design principles.

Before you start: Create a "Lastname_Unity-Emphasis" folder on your network space. Save all files to this folder.

UNITY/EMPHASIS Slide Show: We are taking our layout information from the website of Parkland Community College and their Graphic Design Program. Here is the slideshow regarding Unity and Emphasis.

Before you get started: You will be given an item which you will be "advertising." This will be a generic "thing." If it makes things easier, you can think of this as an advertisement similar to the "Milk" or "Beef" ad campaigns. The available "Things" are:

The Catch-Phrases: You will need to create THREE different Catch-Phrases that you will use in some of your Advertisements. To do this, go to the The Unity/Emphasis Object Advertisement Catch Phrase Worksheet.

The Advertisements: You will be creating a total of ELEVEN different "Ad Layouts" that will correspond to the 11 different UNITY/EMPHASIS principles discussed in class and seen above. Each of these Layouts will be created on a 8 1/2 inch WIDE by 11 inch TALL canvas in Photoshop. You will be following the rules below for the creation of your ad:

  1. Your goal is not necessarily to create the most amazing and eye-catching ADVERTISEMENT, but rather to demonstrate the UNITY/EMPHASIS principle being illustrated on each canvas.
  2. For the Background and Foreground and Font colors on your advertisements, please limit yourself to THREE colors total. These can be black, white and gray or any other combination that you wish.
  3. You will include a "Catch Phrase" on your advertisement, laid out in a way that exemplifies the UNITY/EMPHASIS principle that you are illustrating for that particular canvas. You CAN omit this "Catch Phrase" if other visuals are enough to make your advertisement persuasive. (However, if you do this, make sure you include the "Advertiser's Statement" from #8 below!)
  4. You can use multiple fonts and font sizes if you wish.
  5. Please include appropriate graphics as appropriate. I advise you to keep these clean and simple, however. MASK images, as needed, to keep your layout free of unwanted clutter. Feel free to get creative with this.
  6. For each of your ELEVEN canvases, please use DIFFERENT fonts, graphics, clip art, etc. I do not want to see the same sad letters and pictures over and over again.
  7. Be creative!
  8. Somewhere, in small letters at the bottom of the advertisement, please include an advertiser's statement, similar to the following: Brought to you by the National Tree Huggers Committee or Sponsored by The Society to Re-establish Pencil Superiority.
  9. When you have completed a canvas in this assignment, save it as a JPEG and call it "lastname_contrast_size_ad.jpg" or "lastname_repetition_ad.jpg".

SKILLS you should be using: You can and should be using ALL of the skills that you have acquired to date in Photoshop and in this class: Creating Shapes, Writing Text, Changing Color and Contrast, Saving pictures from the Internet and Masking of Objects from Backgrounds.. If there is something you would like to do for an Advertisement, but are not sure how, ask Mr. B.!

Time Schedule: It took Mr. B. about 15-20 minutes to complete each of his sample Advertisements. 20 minutes x 11 different Advertising Canvases = about 2 1/2 class periods to complete this assignment. If you finish this in 20 minutes, YOU ARE NOT TRYING HARD ENOUGH and will fail the assignment!

EXAMPLES: Here are some sample advertisements from the Graphic Design Classes of 2010.

Project Submission: Save each of your Advertising Canvases in a "Lastname_Unity-Emphasis" Folder and copy this folder to the DROPBOX when you are done. Remember, you are saving files as:

  • "lastname_contrast_size_ad.jpg" or
  • "lastname_repetition_ad.jpg", etc.

Grading: This assignment will be worth a total of 200 points:

  • 10 points for proper execution of each of the ELEVEN UNITY/EMPHASIS advertising canvases. (110 points total)
  • 5 points for the proper inclusion of your catch phrase AND/OR your Advertiser's Statement on each Advertising Canvas. (55 points total)
  • 35 points, based upon Mr. B.'s whims, regarding the overall look and eye appeal your final products.
