"The Constitutional Amendments" Assignment

BACKGROUND: For this assignment, you will be researching Amendments to the Constitution.   Each student will research and become familiar with one or two (or possibly even three) Amendments and will create a deliverable that outlines their Amendment.

SOURCE FOR RESEARCH:  Students will use the "Interactive Constitution" from the National Constitution Center Website, linked below:

Please note that you can click on any Article or Amendment of the Constitution from the top bar.  Once on an Amendment page, make sure to read the TEXT of the Amendment.  You can also click various sections of the TEXT of the Amendment to bring up additional EXPLANATIONS of the Amendment in the next panel below the Amendment.  In some cases, you may need to refer to other sources, such as your textbook, other websites or other material for complete information regarding your Amendment(s).

THE ASSIGNMENT:    You will be making TWO PowerPoint Slides for each Amendment that you have been assigned.  Execute the following on your slides:

  • On the FIRST SLIDE, write "Amendment #: (YEAR RATIFIED)" and then the complete TEXT of your Amendment.  Should your Amendment be long and have multiple sections, please select two or three sentences that could be viewed as key components of the Amendment and write them on your slide.
  • On the SECOND SLIDE:  Write a few bullet points IN YOUR OWN WORDS, that outline WHAT THE AMENDMENT ACTUALLY MEANS.  Be very familiar with your Amendment and be prepared to answer questions about it when your slides are presented. Use the EXPLANATIONS sections of the website to help with this information.
  • ALSO on the SECOND SLIDE: Please have a Bullet Point or Graphic that indicates whether the Amendment in question PROTECTS the rights of the citizenry or TAKES AWAY the rights of the citizenry.
  • ALSO on the SECOND SLIDE:  Have a Bullet Point or Graphic that says:  MODERN DAY APPLICATIONS and explain how the Amendment in question pertains to modern day life.
  • Feel free to decorate or design your slides as you wish, but keep your slides presentable.  Feel free to include graphics, if you wish.

SUBMISSION:  When you are done with your slides, SAVE THE POWERPOINT as lastname_AMENDMENT_I, lastname_AMENDMENT_XXI, ETC. and put them into the Q: Drive Civil Government presentation folder.  I will compile all of these into ONE slide show and present it to the class.  YOU will be asked to present your slides to the class.

GRADING:  This assignment will be worth a total of 100 points!
